Moving Office and Its Effect in Google
On the 1st October, Initiative2 shall be relocating to larger offices. This means that we will be affected by this issue.
If you move office, or have done so in the last 20 years, then this will have a negative impact in Google. If your business has moved more than once, then the effect will be even greater.
You will also be affected if:
- your address can take different forms (building names, suites, etc.);
- your postcode has changed, or;
- your phone number has changed.
This issue is of particular relevance to local search. This is of great importance to businesses that trade within a defined geographic location. It is critical because of Google's personalized search, tailored to the searcher's location, particularly if they are using their mobile device.
Spend 1 minute considering whether this might include you. Even if you believe that nothing has changed, it would be worthwhile doing some online searches to look for anomalies.
If everything appears to be OK, then congratulations. But what if you have a problem? If you don't care about your website marketing, then it's not really an issue. However, you wouldn't have read this far, would you?
Usually I would suggest that you first contact whomever looks after your website. However, if they didn't warn you at the time, then it is unlikely that they are geared up to actually sort the problem.
We are usually asked to help when a client is relocating. However, it is a lengthy, time-consuming process, so we believe that it shouldn't be undertaken in isolation, to make it most cost-effective.
