Google Analytics is a free offering from Google. It allows you to record and measure visits to your website.
Do you have Google Analytics?
If the answer is "no", then the question is "why not". But that's a discussion for another day.
If you do have Google Analytics, spend 1 minute reading this. You might not actually, after all.
Most people have their Google Analytics implemented by their web designer. There are different ways that this can be done. If not done properly, it can cause you problems.
Few web designers deliberately do things to cause their clients problems. Most of the issues are caused by laziness or lack of understanding.
The biggest issue is the Google AdWords account in which your data is managed. Agencies often lump together all of their clients under one of the agency's own accounts.
While this is not necessarily wrong, it can't be regarded as good practice.
Problems occur whenever you want to link the Analytics data to some other data, or the Analytics used on a new website with another provider. In both cases, the answer is usually "sorry, can't be done".
Effectively you don't have your Google Analytics data, and you have to start again, losing all the information you have gathered.
The "no" answer is down to ignorance, unless they are being deliberately awkward. If you need help, get in touch.
A bigger problem occurs when you fall out with your provider, they go out of business, or they no longer have the account details.

If your Google Analytics belong to you, not your agency, then congratulations. But what if you have a problem, or you don't know? If you don't care about your online marketing, then it's not really an issue. However, you wouldn't have read this far, would you?
