Should You Do SEO?
SEO, or "Search Engine Optimisation", is all about getting you to number one in Google.
We've been doing it for over 15 years, and are pretty good at it. Our clients are delighted with the results. SEO seems to be a good thing.
Spend 1 minute reading why you shouldn't do SEO.
SEO has always been a medium-term, speculative activity. Results cannot be guaranteed, and as rankings became personalised and localised, it became even more difficult. However, when successful, it can be a powerful source of new business.
So why do I suggest that SEO might not be the thing to do?
If you have a local business, then a map might well appear above the search results.
An even bigger drawback is that up to 4 adverts can appear before the search results.
If both a map and adverts appear, then even if you are number 1, you only appear two thirds of the way down the page. No-one has ever asked me to be number 6 in Google!
It is even worse on mobile. The first thing people see can be an advert. If they click on it, they may never see your entry.
For all of these reasons, we suggest to new clients that they don't start with SEO. Certain basics, yes, but not a full-on campaign. There are better ways to achieve results. Once those are working, SEO can be tackled as a belt-and-braces tactic.
Note that the reasons for this decision are different from not having the ability to succeed with SEO. Also, just because other options exist, doesn't mean that they are right for you either.
If you dominate the first page of Google, then congratulations. But what if you have a problem? If you don't care about your website marketing, then it's not really an issue. However, you wouldn't have read this far, would you?
